Otaki provides the Northern Gateway to Kapiti Coast, one of the fastest developing areas in New Zealand. It is the
earliest settled township in the region, rich in history and enjoys an enviable climate without extremes. Being one hour
from Wellington, fifty minutes from Palmerston North, the beauty of the mountains, coast lines and clear rivers, Otaki is
the jewel in the crown.
Otaki was the earliest settled area on the Kapiti Coast. Maori settlement extends back centuries with Europeans
arriving in the early 1800’s. The area has thrived, aided by very fertile soils and an extremely kind, moderate
microclimate. Dairy farming and market gardening formed a sound basis for development of the area. Today farming
and gardening still are an important aspect of the local economy but wide diversification has taken place over the years
with all facets of modern farming, lifestyle units, gardening of all descriptions including an ever increasing and popular
‘ornamental garden trail’ industry.

Silver sand beaches are crowded with happy, laughing throngs during the summer months, and become the surfers’ and
surf fisherman’s domain during the colder time of the year. They provide excellent safe swimming for all ages and are
patrolled by life savers during the peak of the summer holiday period.

As a contrast to the surf and sand, the district also abounds in streams and rivers for those who prefer to angle for trout
or swim in the clear fresh waters. Tramping in the mountain ranges to the west and dear and pig hunting also are
popular pastimes to spend the weekend in the great outdoors.
